Salt and Light
You are the salt of the earth. (Mat 5:13) You are the light of the world. (Mat 5:14)
Salt and light both play a significant role in our world. Salt has been used like money at different times in history. This is where we get our saying, “worth one’s salt”. Another role that salt plays is as a preservative. Ham’s would be covered in salt. The salt would penetrate the ham preventing bacteria from growing. If you have ever eaten country ham you quickly recognize the flavor of salt. Light has a major impact on our world as well. The process of photosynthesis, plants turning light into energy, requires light. The light enables us to see and keeps our atmosphere right so that we can live and breathe. Both salt and light play major roles in our daily lives. Jesus says that we are salt and light. As believers we play a major role in the world. We are witnesses of God’s Grace. Our lives testify to His saving grace and forgiveness. In Matthew 5:16 Jesus instructs His followers to let their light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Let people know how God has delivered you from sin and how different your life is now. Let them see the life you live. Not that we are perfect, but that we have been transformed by the saving Grace of Jesus Christ. As believers we are to make an impact in our world, among lost and broken people. This is a messy process, but one that is life changing for both parties involved. Go be salt and light this week.
