Miracles are Signs

The miracles found in scripture are absolutely amazing. The five loaves and two fishes turned into enough food to feed the 5000 in John 6:1-14. In John 6:15-21 Jesus walks on the water and tells the disciples not to be afraid. People who had been fed by Jesus on the other side of the sea went looking for Jesus. When they found Him the first question that they asked is “How did you get here?”, but this was not the real question they had. Jesus zero’s in on that question, John 6:26, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.” The people were following Jesus because He feed them and their stomach was full. They wanted another meal. Sometimes we are so amazed by the miracle that we lose sight of Jesus who performed the miracle. There are other times that we prefer the miracle rather than the miracle worker. The Gospel of John refers to the miracles of Jesus as signs. For example, after Jesus turns the water into wine, the gospel says, “This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.” John 2:11 Miracles are signs that point to something else. They point to the miracle worker Jesus. The crowds were astonished at His teaching and His abilities. They had never seen anything like this before. If we do not see the greatness of Jesus in the miracles, then we have missed the point. Again, to John 2:11 says that the signs manifest or reveal Jesus’ Glory. Miracles are a small demonstration of God’s power that should lead to belief. So, let me ask a few questions. Do you seek Jesus because you need a miracle or because of who He is? When you see the work of God are you amazed at the miracle or do you praise God for his greatness? Let’s be honest, when we find ourselves in need we often run to God not because we are in love with Him but because we need Him to do something in our life. So, this leads me to one last question. If God does not answer your prayer with a miracle the way you have deemed He should, will you still love Him, will you still follow Him, will you still praise Him? It is easy to love God when he is doing amazing, visible and identifiable work in our lives, but our faith is revealed when we don’t understand what he is doing. Make sure that the miracles in your life lead you to the miracle worker.
