Saturday

What was Saturday like for Jesus’ followers? It was the sabbath. There was nothing they could do. Imagine for a moment that you are one of the twelve. You have walked away from a business, maybe it was a family business. Maybe you have left a good job with a good income. You left family at home, all to follow this man Jesus. You believed He was the messiah, the chosen one, but now He is dead. You saw all the miracles. You actually ate the bread when He feed the 5000. Then there was His teaching. You gathered there at the mountain and He started, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven...”. Wow, what a teaching! Then He told the parables. You were blessed because Jesus explained it to you. Now…He is dead. What do I do? Am I a fool for following Him? What will happen to us now? I wonder if these were some of the questions that the disciples were wrestling with?

It is amazing how quickly our circumstance and our perspectives can change. On Saturday the disciples could not imagine what they would encounter on Sunday even though Jesus had been clear about what was coming. I wonder how many times God has tried to show me or teach me something and like the disciples, I just could not comprehend it. The time between the crucifixion and the resurrection must have been lonely and difficult. I wonder, is that where we find ourselves? We are quarantined. We are unable to move about freely. This time can be lonely and difficult, or it can be a time for what comes next. Then the question becomes, are you ready?
