In Genesis 5, we are introduced to a man by the name of Enoch. Verse 24 gives a great declaration about Enoch’s relationship with God. It says, “And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.” Enoch walked with God! This is the goal of the Christian life. If we walk with God, then we must live a life that is pleasing to him. Our lives here on earth must bring honor to His name. We must master the ability to converse with God, both talk with and listen to Him. The end result of Enoch was that God called him home in the most unique way possible, without Enoch dying. So why is it so hard to walk with God? There are many reasons that people struggle. One reason is that we struggle with distraction. Our culture is always on the move. The ability to ponder and to think deeply on any given issue has diminished with our attention span. By the way, our attention span is less than that of a goldfish. Our culture leans away from God, which means many of the influences in our lives are pulling us away from our walk with God. There is a saying that if Satan cannot make us sin he will make us busy, which has the same end result which is less time with God. Sometimes we are just selfish, and we want to do what we want to do. So, what do we do to walk closer with God? Realize that our walk with God is a relationship that requires our time and attention. We know that family, friends, our spouse, and our kids all require us to invest time if we are to have good relationships. Time is the most valuable commodity in our culture. God desires time with us and it will be time well spent. To walk with God, we have to slow our minds, so that we can focus on Him and hear from Him. Walking with God is not always about speaking to Him. Let me leave you with this today. The most important thing you will do today is to walk with Jesus. After this everything else will fall in place. You will have better marriages, better relationships with your kids, you will be able to handle the burdens of life better because you are walking with Him in everything you do. Walking with Jesus becomes a way of life, a filter for living life.
