I talk about community a lot because we need it. There are many forces in our culture that pull us apart or isolates us. The American ideology of rugged individualism, social media, political tribalism, and the idea that no one could possibly understand what I am going through are all ideas that isolate us. Jesus chooses the 12 disciples to walk with him. In the most difficult moment of His life, as He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus wanted the 12 disciples to be there with Him (Luke 22). Paul always surrounded himself with others. We see this in his letters as those with Paul, greet those who he is writing to (Titus 3:15). The story of Elijah believing he is the only one faithfully serving God, when in reality, there are Thousands (1 Kings 19). When you and I are left alone or isolated over time we drift to a negative perspective. We begin to doubt abilities, callings, wonder if what we are doing is worth it and look at others with skepticism. This is why the scriptures talk about the ministry of ‘one another’. This ministry keeps us connected. The life of following Christ is a life of community and connectedness. So, this begs the question, are you connected? Are you connected to the local body of believers? Do you know what is happening in other people’s lives? Do they know what is going on in yours? Do you pray and support one another? A community of believers is design by God to do life together. To love on one another. To carry one another’s burdens. To hold one another accountable for our life in Christ. To know others and be known at a deep level. I want to encourage you to be a part of the community. The community needs you and you need the community.
