THE GREATNESS OF GOD

Scripture finds many ways to describe the greatness of God. In Isaiah 6 God’s greatness is described with a thundering voice that shakes the door post, with angelic beings crying Holy continually, and God high and lifted up seated upon His throne. The scene is majestic. In Exodus 19 the people of Israel are told to consecrate themselves or make themselves ready for God to descend on the mountain. They were instructed to stay away and not touch the mountain or they would die. The presence of God was represented by a thick cloud that was accompanied by thunder and lighting. The mountain smoked; the ground quaked. This is a scene of power and greatness. The psalmist referred to God as the creator of Heaven and Earth, because they could not think of anything greater than the God who created everything. He is the rock that is higher than I in Psalm 61:2. In Psalm 91:4 we are told there is refuge under His wings. In Hebrews 1:1-2 God is declared as having spoken in "various ways" and at "various times" down through history but that His greatest way of speaking was in the revelation of His Son, Jesus. He is Immanuel, God with Us.

So, how do you view God?

Is He big? Is He great? Is He greater than your worry? Is He greater than your fear? Is He greater than your bad diagnoses? Is He greater than you? Is He greater than your sin?

God has only revealed enough of Himself for us to begin to comprehend who He is and how great He is. Romans says, that He demonstrated His love toward us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. Now that is some kind of love. On the Cross God the Father demonstrated His Holiness by not being able to look on sin and He demonstrated His wrath toward sin as He poured out punishment on Jesus. John describes the miracles of Jesus as signs. What do the signs point to? They point to the greatness of Jesus. If He can heal the lame, make the blind to see, raise men from the dead and ultimately conquer death, hell and the grave, what exactly is there in my life or in yours that God cannot take care of? Nothing! This is why Paul says that we are more than conquerors. So, let me ask you, How Great is your God? Take a moment and ponder how great He is. Let those thoughts move you to worship a God that is greater than our human mind can comprehend.
