Busyness

This time in history has given us many modern and wonderful conveniences. We have shows about everything under the sun. We can watch these shows on demand on multiple devices. Our homes are smart. They control everything from thermostats to lights. Our cars are smart as well. They notify us when we are departing our lane and they connect to our phone where we have maps and the world of music in our hand. Email and texts messaging are growing by the day. In many ways the modern conveniences have allowed us to become busier. I wonder if we have allowed busyness to creep in to our spiritual lives and into the church. Church can become something we check off our list, rather than a deep intimate relationship with God and his people. We have to hurry through the motion of church because we have plans, good plans with good people. We are busy. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” We are good with knowing that He is God, but that ‘be still’ part is difficult in our fast-paced society. Why can’t I get to know God on the move? What would it take for you to be still and focus on God for 5 minutes?

1 Samuel 15:22 says,

“Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD?

Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.”

Are we more comfortable sacrificing, giving money, going to church, attending Sunday school, reading our Bible, than being with God? How do you feel about sitting in the presence of God just so that you can be with Him and not seeking anything from Him? Does it feel like a waste of time to be still and quiet before Him? We say we want God to speak into our life but most of us would prefer a text or social media post from God than to hear Him speak into the inner portion of our being. Take time this afternoon to sit still in the presence of God. Give God five minutes of your focus. You might be surprised by how difficult focusing on God is. You may be humbled because for the first time in a while you hear His voice. You may rejoice because you feel the love of your Savior.
